BATON ROUGE, La. – From its humble 1961 beginnings in the basement of the state capitol building to its status as a premier financial institution, La Capitol Federal Credit Union is proudly celebrating 65 years of service. While the credit union has navigated more than six decades of industry change, it remains steadfast in its mission: improving the financial well-being of its members.
La Capitol has evolved from a budding organization serving the State Department of Commerce and Industry into a statewide pillar that prioritizes member financial health and community investment. “We have grown from serving a small group of state employees to a robust financial institution with more than 53,000 members and 15 branches stretching across the state,” President and CEO Michael Hooper said.
“When I visit our branches, I am proud to see how far we have come—evolving and expanding our reach to better serve our members and communities,” Hooper added.
Start of a Year-long Celebration
La Capitol will celebrate its 65th Anniversary for a full year with community outreach, multimedia features, philanthropic endeavors, and promotional offers tied to the 65-year milestone. Members and the public can follow the developments on the credit union’s website and social media channels. The first anniversary offering is an enhanced dividend rate on La Capitol’s Choice Checking account. Credit union members can earn an added percentage on balances up to $10,000, giving them even more value simply for using their everyday checking account. “This special rate underscores our ongoing commitment to helping members grow their financial wellness at every stage of life,” Hooper said.
La Capitol’s People-First Mission
Hooper highlights growth and innovation but emphasizes one constant – La Capitol’s unwavering commitment to improving the financial well-being of its members. The not-for-profit financial cooperative’s members are its owners.
The value created is returned to members through better rates, fewer fees, and superior service. “Rooted in the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people,’ we stay dedicated to this timeless mission and to being a trusted financial partner—today and for generations to come,” Hooper said.
