It was far from a normal Wednesday morning last month at Cannata’s Family Market in Houma. Shoppers began lining up as early as 5:30 am for the latest Pelican Pays, an event in which Pelican Credit Union gives back to its communities. At Cannata’s, a total of $10,000 in groceries were given away, with 200 families leaving with $50 worth of free groceries each.
Throughout the morning, Pelican team members could also be seen helping cashiers bag customers’ groceries and assisting shoppers. The events now known as Pelican Pays began several years ago when the Pelican team would stop into a locally owned coffee shop or restaurant unannounced and pay the tab for a few hours. The surprised patrons expressed gratitude and were encouraged to pay it forward. The feedback was so positive that the program was formalized with the cooperation of local partners like Cannata’s.
Pelican membership is not necessary to receive free groceries or giveaway items. CEO Jeff Conrad said the Pelican Pays events have taken on a deeper meaning in recent years as prices have increased across the board, stretching many people’s budgets. “It’s a tough time right now in this economy,” Conrad told shoppers. “We know your money doesn’t go as far as it used to. Our team is committed to being a positive light and making a difference through outreach and human connection like we’re doing today.”
One member said the Pelican Pays event at Cannata’s made a tangible difference for people in Terrebonne Parish. She said, “I’m just so thankful for what Pelican is doing here today. It really is a blessing from God to have them in our community.” “We love this direct form of community support that has an immediate impact on people,” said Leigh Porta, Pelican’s Chief Growth Officer. “We have a lot of team members who are able to get out of the office for a day, and they love that. We’re lucky to have great people who are always excited to give back.”
