BATON ROUGE – “You opened a savings account at La Capitol FCU and met your savings goal for the year – Collect $200!” An old board game favorite with a brand-new twist places La Capitol in the world of MONOPOLY: Baton Rouge Edition.

The money matters collaboration met July 12-13, 2025, when volunteers from La Capitol with Mr. Monopoly in tow participated in the Knock Knock Children’s Museum Earn and Learn Weekend. The annual event, held in partnership with Society of Louisiana CPAs, explored math and money through play while building essential skills such as earning, saving, sharing, and spending special coins earned at the activity stations.

The iconic board game got a Baton Rouge makeover a little over a year ago thanks to game company Top Trumps USA who enlisted local businesses, nonprofits and landmarks to get on board with the idea. The Baton Rouge board includes customized Community Chest cards featuring La Capitol.

Monopoly has always fostered good money habits. Players start with a set amount of money and must make decisions about buying properties, paying rent, and budgeting for expenses like taxes and Chance card misfortunes. This teaches the importance of managing money wisely to stay in the game and avoid suffering financial losses.

La Capitol President Michael Hooper, who is also a member of the Louisiana CPA group, said the event and the board game spotlights two key credit union initiatives – financial literacy and community engagement. “Monopoly, beyond being a board game, offers insights into personal finance, business principles, and life lessons,” he said.
