BATON ROUGE, La. – La Capitol Federal Credit Union Bilingual Program Coordinator Vanessa Brown used an art activity to translate visual aspects of money into life lessons in financial literacy. The goal was to plant seeds that will grow into future money management skills.
Brown joined a team of La Cap volunteers at the annual Knock Knock Children’s Museum Earn and Learn event held June 13-14, 2026, in Baton Rouge. The interaction, sponsored by the Society of Louisiana CPAs, gives children a hands-on introduction to money management. As they travel through various stations, they earn coins by completing activities and then use those coins to shop for prizes in a kid-sized store.
Brown helped the children earn at her station and two of her La Cap team members worked at the store where the coins were spent.
Christina Ann Lupo, Communications Director for the Society of Louisiana CPAs, said the partnership with the Knock Knock Museum aims to promote financial literacy from childhood to adulthood, aligning with the CPA Society’s goal to improve financial capability across all age groups. “Our mission is really focused on financial literacy from the cradle to grave and we’re committed to improving the financial capability of all ages,” she said.
The CPA group sponsors a similar event each year in the New Orleans area.
La Cap President and CEO Michael Hooper, who is also a member of the Society of Louisiana CPAs, said the initiative aligns with the credit union’s 65 Acts of Service campaign, a year-long effort to give back to the communities it serves during its 65th anniversary celebration. “We want to create an atmosphere that goes beyond simply giving back,” Hooper said. “We want to invest our time, talents, and financial expertise to make a meaningful impact on our members and the communities we serve.”
Teaching financial literacy through structured play is a natural fit for financial institutions like La Cap. “We are in a unique position to foster lifelong learning and encourage family conversations about money,” Hooper said. “Those discussions can lead to stronger financial habits and more informed citizens for generations to come.”
